NotebookLM from Google Labs has received a major expansion, giving users the power to turn their study material into immersive conversations. With the new Audio Overview, uploaded documents can be instantly transformed into dynamic discussions hosted by AI voices. The system creates summaries, connects themes, and produces downloadable conversations that learners can take anywhere. The update reflects Google’s growing push to make learning more interactive and personalised.
NotebookLM Audio Overview turns uploaded sources into a discussion
Biaz Wang, who is the Product Manager at Google Labs, made it clear that the feature of Audio Overview gives users an opportunity to add slides, PDFs or web URLs and create a discussion within one click. Two artificial intelligence hosts discuss, in a back-and-forth, the material of the source and reveal the connections between the issues. Playing the discussion in NotebookLM or downloading it can be performed by the users.

The tool is aimed at enhancing an understanding of the people who understand better through listening. The aspect remains experimental. It is only English-supported, and it can be inaccurate, and it is not possible to interrupt in the middle of the conversation. In the case of bigger notebooks, it can take minutes to create an Audio Overview. Nonetheless, Google Labs expressed optimism about realising potential in conversational audio as a study companion in spite of these restrictions.
New interactive tools expand NotebookLM’s learning ecosystem
Over the summer, NotebookLM adopted Gemini 1.5 multimodal capabilities, enabling support for Google Slides and URL imports. This is the groundwork that is added with interactive learning introduced as Flashcards and Quizzes. Flashcards, according to Google’s announcement, extract the key factual items out of notebooks, and Quizzes enable users to create topics, change difficulty, and share study sets with peers using links.
Both formats provide access to the supporting information directly, which strengthens memorisation and recollection. The Audio Overview has also been enhanced with three formats: Brief, Debate, and Critique. Brief presents single-voice summaries, Debate introduces two perspectives, and Critique frames a conversational review. Together, these options provide varied learning experiences, echoing different teaching styles.
Personalised study guides and custom report formats arrive
NotebookLM continues to evolve beyond simple note management. Study Guides and Briefing Docs have long been part of the platform, but Google has now introduced a Blog Post format. This mode uses the source material to suggest content types such as strategy papers or market explainers.
For advanced customisation, the “Create Your Own” report feature lets users describe the desired format, which the AI then produces. Another addition is the Learning Guide. Google described it as a digital tutor that asks open-ended questions, breaks down problems step-by-step, and adapts explanations to individual needs. By encouraging participation, the tool aims to build a deeper understanding instead of just providing answers.
