OpenAI has released a new Study Mode in ChatGPT, as part of a broader effort to make the AI chatbot an exercise tool to communicate with more and enhance the experience of learning with it, instead of a simple hack to find answers. The aspect also motivates students to be interactive and think critically since it takes them through concepts procedurally. As the fear about the misuse of AI in education grows, OpenAI claims that the tool will not be the replacement of learning but only support learning instead. Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users are all rolled into the pilot with Edu accounts anticipated to be next in line.

New Study Mode Aims to Transform How Students Use ChatGPT

OpenAI has introduced the Study Mode, a new way of engagement in the interaction of students with ChatGPT that relies on guided learning. Rather than providing direct answers to the questions, the tool poses follow-up questions that direct the users to describe their rationale or clarify their objectives with regards to the learning. It operates by adapting responses to the level of organizational skills of a user to critical thinking, which assists students in developing a more profound grasping of academic materials.

OpenAI noted in its announcement that the feature is meant to allow the students to learn rather than to complete something. The goal of Study Mode is to support learning science by schoolteachers with knowledge used through custom built system instructions that enable the learning science principles of managing cognitive load, building metacognitive skills, promoting curiosity, and providing clear feedback.

The formulation of Study Mode can be traced back to growing pressure among educational establishments to deal with the utilize of AI instruments to complete their schoolwork.

Constructed By Teachers to promote responsible use of AI in Schools

The formulation of Study Mode can be traced back to growing pressure among educational establishments to deal with the utilize of AI instruments to complete their schoolwork. By the time ChatGPT was introduced in 2022, educators were already concerned that it would drive cheating and so some school districts have banned it. Throughout history, schools were removing those bans as they recognized the long-term AI presence in the world of education.

According to Leah Belsky, VP of Education at OpenAI, Study Mode is the attempt of the company to align ChatGPT with the notion of responsible academic use. She remarked that over one-third of American college-age users indulge in ChatGPT use, and approximately one-quarter of their messages are about studies and academic works. Insisting that we should think of Study Mode as being of assistance to and not replacing the learning process, she stated.

Jayna Devani, international lead of education at OpenAI, stated that the tool assists students to become more reflective in their learning. We are certainly not of the opinion that these tools are supposed to be abused and this is a step in that direction, she said. She, however, added that it will take a more comprehensive effort that will cut across the education dimension and involve new standards of responsible use of AI.

Cases of Cheating Increase with Adaptation of AI in Education

The introduction of Study Mode overlaps with the increases in dishonesty-related academic misconduct that is associated with AI tools. An investigation by a poll by the Guardian found that in the UK, 2023/2024 academic year, there were almost 7,000 reports of proven cheating using AI in universities alone compared to a little more than 2,000 cases in the previous academic year. That leap translates into fighting 5.1 incidences out of every 1000 students, as opposed to 1.6 before.

The introduction of Study Mode overlaps with the increases in dishonesty-related academic misconduct that is associated with AI tools.

OpenAI added that Study Mode is not the full answer that is implemented without any involvement. In a particular case when a user wants to know about Bayes theorem, the chatbot will answer by asking the user his or her level of understanding math and the objective he or she has. This back and forth is to make certain that the student learns the subject as opposed to following the solution.Claude, a feature that encourages ethical educational use, was followed to some degree by Anthropic in April, when its Claude chatbot was given a feature named Learning Mode.

Students of course are still in charge of the experience-Better or Worse

OpenAI also stated that it had not applied any limitation to ensure that the user could not switch out of the Study Mode. Belsky added that it would not be possible to lock students in the feature with any admin or parental control currently but it can be looked into in the future. This implies that the effectiveness of the tool is based on motivation of students.

A dedicated student will be required to Study Mode, Belsky told TechCrunch, the youngsters need to want to learn, not barely accomplish the task. The Study Mode is already available in the Tools menu, and the logged-in user will even see it under the Study and learn option. The tool cannot completely forbid shortcuts, but the OpenAI is optimistic about it and wants it to be a positive contribution to a closer approach to academic material.

Humanize AI provides a simple and user-friendly interface for rewriting AI-generated text. It’s suitable for users looking for basic rewriting without too many options. The rewritten output, while grammatically correct, tends to be overly formal and wordy, which can reduce the natural feel of the content. GPTZero testing showed a 5% AI detection rate, suggesting moderate success in bypassing AI detectors. The free plan allows 300 words or up to 1800 characters per request, which is enough for brief paragraphs or social posts. Overall, Humanize AI is best suited for casual users needing quick rewrites, rather than professionals aiming for stealth. AI Humanize AI Humanize attempts to improve user experience by offering real-time visual feedback on metrics such as sentence length, perplexity, and tone variation. It uses Falcon 1.0 and Falcon 2.0 models to rewrite AI-generated text. However, the output quality leaves much to be desired. During testing, the tool introduced multiple punctuation errors and often produced sentences that lacked coherence. The free plan permits rewriting up to 400 words, which helps experiment with its features. Despite the appealing analytics dashboard, the overall text output isn't reliable enough for publishing. It’s more of a tool for educational experimentation than practical use.
