The system estimates whether a user is under the age of 18, regardless of the birthdate provided when the account was created. If flagged as underage, the user will face restricted access to certain features and content unless they verify their age with accepted proof. This move comes as technology platforms face growing pressure to enforce stricter content and safety measures for younger audiences.
New System Targets Teen Protections
Starting August 13, 2025, YouTube began deploying its age estimation model for US-based users. The company stated that the goal is to ensure teens receive age-appropriate product experiences, including safety features and content restrictions, regardless of the self-reported date of birth on an account.According to YouTube, the technology builds on protections already in place for accounts identified as belonging to users under 18. These include default activation of digital wellbeing tools such as “take a break” and bedtime reminders, limits on personalized ads, and reminders about privacy when uploading videos or commenting publicly.
The model also reduces recommendations for content that could be problematic if repeatedly viewed.Company representatives explained that the update will allow these protections to reach more teens by accurately identifying them through AI analysis. YouTube confirmed that the same approach has been in use in other countries for some time, where it has performed effectively, and is now being expanded to the US.
How the AI Model Works
This AI trained on age estimation takes into consideration a wide range of signals such as how a particular user uses YouTube or how long their account on the platform has been on the site. Where the system detects that a user is most likely not 18 years and above, it will provide a notification.
