Google Declares AI-Generated Content Can Rank—If It’s Helpful
Mountain View, CA — In a decisive move shaking up digital publishing, Google officially updated its search documentation on July 2, clarifying that AI-generated content is not penalized if it is helpful, original, and follows E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) principles.
“Our systems reward content based on quality, not how it was produced,” said Lizzi Sassman, Search Advocate at Google, during a Search Central Live session. “The focus is usefulness to the reader.”
The announcement came amid growing debates over AI-written blogs dominating search results. Several marketers had expressed concern that quality human work was being buried under mass-produced AI text.

Since the update, early data from Ahrefs shows a 6.2% rise in visibility for AI-assisted content that follows Google’s Helpful Content System. Conversely, spammy or repetitive AI content has seen de-indexing.
“This guidance legitimizes responsible use of AI,” noted Areeb Sheikh, CEO of a major SEO firm. “But it also raises the bar.”
