From Drones to Cybersecurity: How AI Is Shaping the Future of Defence

In the current era of swiftly changing international security, artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a thing restricted to laboratories or corporate data centres, as it is already changing the way countries protect themselves. The battlefield is being transformed by AI, with drones operating without pilots, algorithms determining military targets and many other processes. Military analysts such as those at NATO and the United Nations acknowledge that AI is developing revolutionary new benefits and deadly new risks.

The most evident examples of integrating AI into defence are the emergence of autonomous drones and cyberwar tools. However, underneath that hardware is a revolution in decision-making, surveillance, logistics and even international law. With the shifting nature of warfare, our concepts of power wielders, threats, and the meaning of purported human control must change as well. Let’s explore this outlook.

Smart Drones

One development that occurred is the emergence of AI-powered drones as one of the most disruptive military devices in the current environment. In contrast to conventional drones that are operated by humans, the AI-driven drones can navigate places, detect objects, and even activate strikes without involving or controlling humans to do the job. Such drones are already having significant roles in the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

As an example, the Bayraktar TB2 drone (manufactured by Turkey), deployed by Ukraine, features long-range surveillance and can be used to target enemies with the assistance of AI. These drones were crucial in assisting Ukraine in reclaiming such strategic points as Snake Island in the initial phases of the war.

Russia has deployed drones armed with AI on the other side of the war, whose moving maps and vision systems aim at power patterns without GPS.

The American military is developing the so-called Replicator program to create thousands of cheap drones to discourage China. These swarms would sap the ability of the enemy to defend itself, resulting in the so-called hellscape that can be experienced in possible hot spots such as the Taiwan Strait, as described by U.S. officials.

Cybersecurity and AI

Outside the warzone, AI is reshaping cybersecurity, as well. Military AI tools are used to process huge data flows to identify the threat, false signals, or cyber-attacks. AI decision-support systems (DSS) may assist commanders in rapid evaluation of options and results.

But with the emergence of AI in cyberwar is new threat. Malware that learns, artificial intelligence-created misinformation, and data poisoning attacks may shut down vital infrastructure systems or influence the masses in an emergency. Other governments have started to consider cyberattacks as an act of war, particularly in case AI is involved to automate the threat.

In response, NATO has developed the ethical AI principles and has invested in partnering with member states in enhancing cybersecurity. The alliance wants to make sure that any AI implemented in a military way is controllable, transparent and should be answerable.

Cybersecurity and AI

Real-World Conflicts: Ukraine and Gaza as test cases

In Ukraine,AI and drones in Ukraine have changed the face of modern warfare. Ukraine has deployed local maid drones fitted with explosives and upgraded with AI in order to strike Russian targets. One million FPV drones, the majority of which are controlled by civilians and novice businesses, are the keys to the existence of Ukraine. They use software that identifies and follows the Russian vehicles with the aid of AI even in low visibility.

Russia has fought back with drone enhancements of their own, powered by AI. Its Lancet drones and digital scene-matching technology-enhanced Shahed-136s deliver attacks with almost no communications to important Ukrainian infrastructure. Russia is also experimenting with swarming drones, where one drone feeds another drone real-time intelligence, as natural systems such as bird flocks might do.

In Gaza, Israel has been using AI-based targeting systems like Lavender and The Gospel. It is said that these tools make use of social data and behavioral analytics to come up with kill lists. Human rights probes suggest that these types of systems might be able to elude human control resulting in the killing of masses of civilians. Even in the case of such activities, AI might take only a few seconds to recognize a target, which is not enough to be checked by a lawyer or taken into ethical account.

The Ethics and Legal Debate

Ethical and legal concerns are considered to be serious regarding the use of AI in warfare. Who should be responsible in case a drone that is flying alone kills civilians? What do we do to control learning and adaptive systems? These concerns prompted the world to demand the prohibition of fully autonomous weapons commonly known as killer robots.

The UN and International Committee of the Red Cross emphasize on such requirement as having meaningful human control of lethal AI systems. However, definitions are different. Others such as the U.S. stress on innovation and voluntary standards. Others, such as Austria and most of the Global South, are pushing towards such a binding treaty in 2026.

One of such concerns is predictability. Ultimately, AI systems, and deep learning ones in particular, might make choices others, including their developers, do not entirely understand. This black box effect makes legal responsibility murky and in itself introduces the possibility of (or at least the temptation of) error, or abuse.
