Social media and classroom discussions revolve around how to write better prompts or use ChatGPT for essays. Teachers are asking how to detect AI, while students are learning how to bypass readings. But this focus on technique misses the real issue. Instead of asking how to use AI, educators must start asking why and when it is appropriate.

Methods dominate the conversation around AI in education. Educators and students alike are searching for better strategies to write, prompt, and detect AI-generated content. These discussions often treat learning as a production task, where the goal is a polished result.

This technical concentration has even been considered as a warning by specialists who defend the lie that this direction does not emphasize the actual goal of education. The how is a mechanical question. The why and when questions are philosophical. AI has high stakes to race in without any sign of eliminating them, becoming a shortcut that would not be useful.

Educators must lead the shift. They need to ask what kind of learning matters and how AI fits into that vision. The right question is not how to use AI efficiently. It’s whether its use supports the intellectual virtues that education should foster.
