Perplexity AI, a rising contender in the online search market led by co-founder Aravind Srinivas, announced Monday a new revenue-sharing initiative aimed at media outlets. The move comes as the AI-powered search engine seeks to provide publishers with a share of profits generated when their content is used by Perplexity’s browser or AI assistant to satisfy user queries.The startup revealed plans to distribute millions of dollars through a subscription service called Comet Plus, designed to ensure journalists and publishers benefit from AI-driven business models. According to the company, a $42.5 million pool has been set aside to compensate media partners, with expectations that this fund will expand over time.

“We’re compensating publishers in the model that’s right for the AI age,” Perplexity AI stated in a blog post. The service will charge $5 per month, offered as an add-on to existing premium subscriptions, while Pro and Max subscribers will receive Comet Plus access included in their memberships.Perplexity AI emphasized that Comet Plus reflects the changing dynamics of online content consumption. Traditional publisher compensation systems, based primarily on clicks and pageviews, fail to account for the value of AI-driven content interactions, the company noted.
“AI is an intrinsic part of how we browse the internet. Human visits, search citations, and agent actions each represent real value creation, yet traditional models only compensate for the first,” the company said. Comet Plus seeks to recognize all three types of traffic, providing publishers with revenue that reflects the current realities of digital consumption.The subscription will enable users to access content from participating publishers directly. It also allows AI assistants to complete tasks using the publishers’ content, ensuring journalists’ work contributes to both human and AI-driven interactions. A small portion of revenue will cover Perplexity’s compute costs, with the remainder distributed to publishers.
