Mozilla has announced the public release of Firefox 141, featuring a local AI-powered tool designed to simplify tab management. This new version of the open-source browser is a lighter update in terms of scale but introduces a major usability enhancement. At the core of the update is the smart tab grouping feature, which leverages on-device AI to categorize open tabs based on content similarity. Alongside this, Firefox 141 includes several usability improvements, Linux-specific optimizations, added translation languages, and web development updates. The AI feature is designed with user privacy in mind, performing all analysis locally without sending data to Mozilla servers. Firefox 141 is being rolled out progressively, with most users receiving the update automatically over the coming days.
Local AI Takes Charge of Tab Organization
Mozilla’s most notable innovation in Firefox 141 is the integration of local AI to enhance tab group management. As previously introduced, Firefox supports tab groups, enabling users to sort their open tabs into named and color-coded collections. These can be arranged using either the horizontal or vertical tab layout. Now, Mozilla has introduced a feature that allows the browser to suggest additional tabs for existing groups using local AI.Users can access the smart suggestion feature by right-clicking a tab group identifier and selecting the new “Suggest more tabs for group” option.
Once permissions are confirmed, Firefox analyzes tab titles and descriptions to identify similar content and recommends inclusion. According to Mozilla, this analysis remains entirely local to protect user privacy. The feature was tested using related domains, such as multiple open Ghacks articles, and showed consistent accuracy in grouping relevant tabs.Mozilla emphasized that the final choice remains with users, who can easily uncheck any suggested tabs before confirmation. This allows for full manual control while still benefiting from intelligent automation.
Progressive Rollout and Manual Activation
The AI-enhanced tab suggestion is under steady rollout through the Firefox installations. Those who would want to activate it can do it instantly by using the advanced configuration page of Firefox. The option is enabled by following:config and enabling the setting of browser.tabs.groups.smart.enabled to True.
Mozilla explained that the AI functionality can be used at present in a single browser window. Suggestions provided are depending on tab content match and might consist of an automatically suggested name of the group. The users are allowed to keep or change the proposed name, and reject or confirm any tabs suggestions.
Optimization of the System and Usability Enhancement
There are also a few improvements of interface and performance in Firefox 141. With the vertical tab layout, the tools section located at the bottom may now be resized to consume more/less display space. Use of memory has been minimised in the Linux systems and restarting the browser also is not required any more after updates made on it through the package manager.
Address autofill is available to Brazil, Spanish, and Japanese users. Also, the address bar of the browser has been improved and can perform real time unit conversions. By typing in queries like 24 C to F, a direct answer will occur, which can be helpful on a daily basis and not further searching is needed.
Translation gains more language support Library.
Mozilla has also extended the capability of Firefox in terms of translation. Nine new languages are supported at Firefox 141: Albanian, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Kannada, Malay, Malayalam, Persian, Telugu. The languages can now enjoy the innate translation tool in Firefox, that allows its users to translate pages without having to install third party extensions or getting the services of a third party resource. In Windows 11, the browser uses system-provided font icons as caption buttons and provides a more coordinated visual feel resembling the native look and feel of the operating system.
Updates for Developers and Web Standards
Firefox 141 includes several under-the-hood changes targeted at developers. The browser now partially supports the webkitdirectory attribute and its corresponding HTMLInputElement.webkitdirectory property on Android. This enhances the compatibility of input forms that allow directory uploads.Additionally, the browser now clears the back-forward cache (bfcache) when the “cache” directive of the Clear-Site-Data header is used.
Other updates include support for the persistentDeviceId property in the PointerEvent interface and scrollMargin in the IntersectionObserver interface. Mozilla has also implemented the closedBy attribute for HTML dialog elements and introduced the i18n.getPreferredSystemLanguages method for retrieving OS-preferred locales.Support for Cookies Having Independent Partitioned State (CHIPS) has also been re-enabled. This allows developers to opt cookies into top-level site partitioning, aligning Firefox with ongoing efforts in web privacy and cross-site tracking prevention.
Enterprise and Security Considerations
Firefox 141 also has increased policy support to enterprise users. Policies pertaining to Pocket have been put back to accommodate compatibility in Firefox Home. New preferences policies give administrators the ability to manage rendering technologies, security preferences, such as preferences regarding SVG, WebGL, MathML, and fingerprinting protection.Mozilla has not as yet issued comprehensive security advisories on Firefox 141 but it is likely that they would be published in the near future. Individual users and companies are advised to watch the Mozilla Security Advisories page.Together with Firefox 141, Mozilla has issued a new version of all Extended Support Release (ESR) upstreams. These are Firefox 140.1 ESR, 128.13 ESR and 115.26 ESR. These builds have the most recent security patches applied, along with the choice of usability enhancements that can be made to suit enterprise form.In the future, the next version of Firefox, 142 will be released on August 19, 2025.
The next monthly update will come along with Firefox 140.2 and 128.14 ESR, the last release in the 128 ESR series.Firefox 141 offers selective enhancements that do not exhaustively refurnish the core browser-using experience. By local AI-driven tab grouping, Mozilla also wants to help the users of alternative web browsers decrease the friction behind the management of large browsing sessions. Useful modifications, increased language support and developer targeting additions complete this release and make sure that Firefox will remain the ever-evolving web browser that keeps meeting user demands and standards. With an even stronger interest in user control and on-device smarts, Firefox 141 will be a milestone success in the direction of intelligent browser help that does not come at the cost of privacy.
